There Be Pirates!
Jaime is, likely, the most unlikely person you’d expect to see plundering, pillaging, and looting on the high seas with perhaps the exceptions of baby Jesus and Thomas the Train. Her depiction of piracy has more to do with my inability to make any other of my three attempts work. I’d nail her likeness in the sketch phase and lose it by mid-tonal phase. If first you don’t succeed, draw, draw again!
Placing your family and friends in incredible or, even better, absurd situations is really my aim of my artistic life.
In other news:
The wife and I regularly joke at the end of a day, week, month, or, especially, a year that “[Insert arbitrary future time] is going to be the [respective duration of arbitrary future time]!”. For example, 2012 is going to be the year! Of course, the saying isn’t funny, but the collective knowledge earned by hard won experience soaks those words in a chipper cynicism and irony. In other words, we don’t take ourselves seriously even though we want to.
Enter 2012. Despite my self-flagellation and the inherent irony which I just wrote about:
2012 is going to be the year!
What do I mean by that? I mean 2012 is going to be the year I finally quit my office job at the University of Oregon (Rose Bowl Champions! Go Ducks!) and become a full-time illustrating entrepreneur.
I’ve come to an inflection point. I’m working enough as an illustrator I’ve reached a ceiling if I don’t severely cut back on my regular job which isn’t a possibility because of my regular jobs demands. And, I don’t earn quite enough from my illustration work to quit my regular job. So, something’s got to give, right?
Right. So, the plan is to set sail by the middle of May when financial condition are ripe. With good planning, lots of hustle, a little skill, and gobs of luck this will come to fruition. Maybe, sooner if the hustle and luck quotient are high.
If not, I’ll regroup and try again because I’m sure that…
…2013 is going to be the year!
