Kickstart My Heart
So, I’ve been thinking…
Cancer treatment is expensive. Yes, I know, this insight lacks a lot of, what you might call, insight. But stick with me. I promise this post will be more than a digital cardboard sign scrawled over in Sharpie with “Anything Helps – God Bless”.
You have been abundantly, exceedingly generous with your time and resources through my battle with cancer. You’ve come along side Jess, my kids, and I; continually holding us up with your unceasing prayers and support. I’m unashamed to boast about you in anyone’s company. My strength draws heavily from the love God has manifest through you.
For that very reason, I’d like to do something for you. Here’s my proposal:
I would like to collect together the sketches, finished work, mistakes, b-sides, and (hopefully) colored pieces that I created from the date of my first diagnoses to the first post-chemotherapy doctor’s appointment. The title for this art book I’m playing with is CHEMO. (Not real original, but, hey, its just a starting point.) Alongside these pictures would be excerpts of my wife’s blog about my cancer journey and her walk beside me.
I would fund the project through Kickstarter or another website of the same kind. After I research the financing of designing and publishing; printing and shipping; taxes and fees for this potential project I would make transparent the costs and benefits for any potential backer. If feasible, I’d add incentives or goals for different levels of financial backing like an individualized sketch, better binding, or hard cover for the book.
Any profit I might make would pay directly to my outstanding medical bills. (I would make those amounts explicit as well.) Any “extra” that I might make, I would donate to a cancer related charity or another person in direct need of financial assistance.
This idea might not be feasible. But to be perfectly honest, if the funding campaign were successful, it likely would take me awhile to fulfill my end because I’m still in the midst of this fight and energy is at a premium. However, I want you to know that I would eventually fulfill my end because I earnestly hope to demonstrate how much I appreciate you and how much your life and continued well-being, both physically and spiritually, means to me by the best and most enjoyable means I know. Art.
This project would not be an attempt to repay you. Instead, it would be an opportunity for me to give you a token of my overwhelming and profound sense of gratitude while marrying it to my family’s present material needs. My hope is that you’d find this little book of greater intrinsic value than whatever you might pay. Most importantly, I hope to create for you all a testament to your goodwill and fellowship in the time of my family’s great struggle.
So, if you like this idea, think you might like to support it, or have some sage advise about publishing, Kickstarter, or life in general, please let me know in the comments or on Facebook or Instagram.
