I Can't Stand the Rain
I’ve always liked Storm. As the elegant, capable member and leader of the X-men she struck the right balance for me between woman and superhero. By which, I mean, she actually seemed to be both at the same time. It’s such a common gripe that it’s almost cliché to complain about women’s portrayal in comics and media, so I won’t rehash it here. Instead, I’ll say that most women in comics, super or otherwise, actually don’t behave like most real women I know. And I think that’s the root cause, really, from which most of the objections spring.
Which leads me to Storm’s Mohawk. There’s nothing objectionable about a Mohawk and, as I’ve stated already, Storm is good by me too. Combine them, though, and I’ll do a double-take and shake my head while walking away. It doesn’t seem her. Rogue, sure. How many regal, self-possessed woman in leadership do you know with Mohawks? Angled bobs, layered with bangs, curly, boy-cut, I’ve seen. Not one Mohawk. Nope. Nada.
